About Us: Woodgate Valley Urban Farm

A community-driven charity providing a safe and inclusive space for people of all ages to connect with nature, learn new skills, and support animal care. Join us in making a positive impact!

Our Story

Woodgate Valley Urban Farm was established in 1988 by a dedicated group of local volunteers who wanted to create a community space where people could engage with nature, learn about sustainable farming, and develop essential life skills. The farm was founded on the belief that rural experiences should be accessible to everyone, especially those living in urban environments.

Initially a small project, the farm has grown into a thriving educational and community hub. Over the years, it has expanded its farmland, orchards, and woodland areas, developed specialised programs for young people and vulnerable individuals, and built strong partnerships with local authorities, schools, and organisations. Today, Woodgate Valley Urban Farm remains a vital resource for education, conservation, and well-being in the wider Birmingham area.

Mission & Vision

At Woodgate Valley Urban Farm, our mission is to provide an inclusive, safe, and nurturing environment where individuals, especially young people with Special Educational Needs, those experiencing social exclusion, and those facing mental health challenges, can gain practical work experience, build confidence, and develop essential life skills.
Our vision is to create a thriving community hub where people of all backgrounds can engage with nature, learn about sustainable farming, and experience the therapeutic benefits of outdoor life. We aim to promote environmental stewardship, education, and well-being through our various initiatives.

Our Work with the Community

The farm manages farmland, orchards, and woodlands within Woodgate Valley Country Park under licence from Birmingham City Council. Our reach extends over 7.5 miles into Birmingham, Sandwell, Solihull, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire, offering vital support to local communities.

We rely entirely on donations, grants, and partnerships to sustain our work. Our projects help tackle social and educational exclusion, equipping people with hands-on farming skills, conservation awareness, and opportunities for self-development. We also collaborate with schools, youth groups, and community organizations to enhance learning experiences.

    Our Animals

Although we operate as a Non-Animal Contact Project, our farm is home to a variety of animals that play a crucial role in our educational and environmental programs. Each animal is cared for by our trained staff and supervised placements to ensure their well-being.

    Meet Our Residents:

    • Goats & Sheep – Used for educational demonstrations and land management.
    • Chickens & Ducks – Help with natural pest control and sustainable farming.
    • Rabbits & Guinea Pigs – Featured in supervised placements for learning experiences.
    • Bees & Pollinators – Vital for our orchard’s health and environmental conservation efforts.

For health and safety reasons, general visitors are not allowed direct contact with the animals. We also enforce a strict no picnics and no animal feeding policy to protect both our visitors and livestock.

Our Commitment to Animal Welfare & Environmental Standards

As a Registered Smallholding, we are regularly inspected by DEFRA (Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs) and monitored by the Animal Welfare Officer of Birmingham City Council. Our adherence to strict regulations ensures our livestock’s well-being and the sustainability of our farm practices.
